Department of Psychiatry

The Department of Psychiatry at Shri Gangaram Medical College & Hospital provides an in-depth understanding of mental health and behavioral sciences. It trains students to diagnose, manage, and empathize with patients suffering from psychiatric illnesses while also promoting mental wellness as a core component of holistic healthcare.

This department covers a wide range of mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, substance use disorders, sleep disturbances, and personality disorders. It also includes topics such as child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, and psychosomatic medicine.

Students are posted in psychiatric outpatient clinics, inpatient wards, de-addiction units, and counseling centers, where they observe and assist in the management of real-life psychiatric cases. Clinical training includes mental status examination (MSE), risk assessment, behavioral observation, therapeutic communication, and psychoeducation.

Students are also introduced to both pharmacological treatments (like antipsychotics, antidepressants, mood stabilizers) and non-pharmacological approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), family therapy, motivational interviewing, and relaxation techniques.

Innovative teaching methods such as role-plays, simulated patient interactions, case discussions, and psychological testing are used to promote understanding and reduce stigma. Special emphasis is placed on legal and ethical aspects of psychiatry, including patient consent, confidentiality, and mental health legislation.

The department is actively involved in community outreach through school mental health programs, suicide prevention workshops, stress management seminars, and awareness campaigns on substance abuse and domestic violence.

Faculty members guide students in conducting research on emerging psychiatric conditions, epidemiological trends, and therapeutic outcomes. Students are encouraged to present at national mental health conferences and publish in psychiatry journals.

The Department of Psychiatry fosters compassionate and empathetic clinical practice, aiming to develop future physicians who can recognize mental health as integral to overall patient care.
