Department of Ophthalmology
The Department of Ophthalmology at Shri Gangaram Medical College & Hospital focuses on the preservation and restoration of sight. It offers students both theoretical and hands-on exposure to the anatomy, physiology, diseases, and surgery of the eye.
The department covers topics such as refractive errors, conjunctivitis, cataract, glaucoma, corneal ulcers, diabetic retinopathy, uveitis, and ocular trauma. Students learn to perform visual acuity testing, slit-lamp examination, ophthalmoscopy, tonometry, and refraction techniques.
Training is conducted through postings in the Eye OPD, surgical theaters, and diagnostic labs. Students observe and assist in procedures like cataract surgery (phacoemulsification), pterygium excision, and foreign body removal.
Simulation-based learning using eye models and surgical simulators enhances skill acquisition in a safe environment. Community outreach activities include school screening camps, diabetic eye checkups, and awareness drives on preventable blindness.
The department is equipped with modern ophthalmic instruments such as autorefractors, fundus cameras, perimetry machines, and lasers.
Research topics include the epidemiology of cataracts, glaucoma screening, ocular infections, and the impact of digital screen exposure on vision. Students are encouraged to participate in conferences, paper presentations, and clinical audits.
The Department of Ophthalmology is committed to creating well-rounded, patient-focused clinicians who can deliver effective eye care and contribute to the prevention of visual disability in the community.
