Department of General Surgery

The Department of General Surgery at Shri Gangaram Medical College & Hospital provides extensive training in the surgical sciences, blending foundational knowledge with hands-on operative skills. It prepares students to become skilled surgeons capable of managing a broad spectrum of surgical conditions with competence and confidence.

Our department offers exposure to all major surgical domains including abdominal surgery, trauma care, soft tissue surgery, hernia repair, thyroid surgery, vascular surgery, and anorectal procedures. Students learn the principles of surgical anatomy, asepsis, preoperative preparation, operative techniques, and post-operative care.

Practical training takes place in fully equipped operation theatres, minor OT rooms, emergency surgical units, and surgical intensive care units (ICUs). Students also participate in outpatient clinics where they assist in evaluating and managing surgical cases under faculty guidance.

The curriculum includes case-based teaching, surgical demonstrations, clinical postings, skills lab training, and procedural workshops. Students are introduced to modern surgical tools and techniques including laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery.

A key component of the department is the Surgical Skills Lab, where students learn suturing, wound dressing, knot-tying, and emergency procedures on models and simulators. This hands-on experience enhances confidence before entering the OT.

Regular seminars, mortality meetings, and interdisciplinary discussions ensure students stay updated with surgical advancements and improve critical thinking. Research areas include surgical infections, wound healing, trauma outcomes, and surgical innovations.

The department actively promotes ethics, surgical judgment, teamwork, and respect for patient dignity. Our goal is to produce surgeons who not only master techniques but also deliver holistic, patient-centric care with empathy and professionalism.
