Department of Pharmacology

The Department of Pharmacology at Shri Gangaram Medical College & Hospital plays a vital role in transforming medical students into rational, ethical, and safe prescribers. It focuses on the scientific study of drugs—their sources, actions, mechanisms, therapeutic uses, and adverse effects. Pharmacology links the knowledge of physiology and pathology with the practical aspects of patient care and therapy.

Our department is equipped with modern laboratories and smart classrooms to provide a rich academic experience. The Experimental Pharmacology Lab houses equipment like organ baths, spirometers, simulators, and digital learning modules that help students understand drug actions through virtual experimentation and simulations in compliance with CPCSEA guidelines.

The teaching methodology integrates traditional lectures with interactive learning strategies such as problem-based learning (PBL), case discussions, drug demonstrations, and adverse drug reaction (ADR) reporting exercises. Students learn about various drug classes, prescription writing, drug interactions, and pharmacovigilance techniques in a structured and clinically relevant manner.

Special focus is placed on Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, where students are trained to prescribe drugs safely and rationally in different clinical conditions. They learn the WHO prescription format, dosage calculations, emergency drug use, and national essential medicine lists, preparing them for real-world healthcare settings.

The department maintains a comprehensive Drug Museum displaying various drug formulations, dosage forms, and modern delivery systems. A dedicated Computer-Assisted Learning (CAL) Lab provides access to e-content, simulation models, and drug action videos for self-paced learning.

Pharmacovigilance and research are strongly emphasized. Faculty members guide students in research related to drug efficacy, ADRs, herbal pharmacology, and new drug trials. The department also contributes to hospital services by monitoring medication safety, conducting drug audits, and promoting antimicrobial stewardship practices.

We conduct regular CME programs, prescription writing workshops, and interdepartmental seminars to keep students and faculty updated with recent advancements in pharmacotherapy. Students are encouraged to present papers in national pharmacology forums and explore career opportunities in clinical research, regulatory affairs, and academic medicine.

The Department of Pharmacology stands firm in its mission to develop safe prescribers, responsible researchers, and informed future clinicians. By instilling scientific acumen, critical judgment, and ethical responsibility, we empower our students to improve healthcare outcomes through informed drug use.
